More Equitable Fees for Traffic Violations?

Manila – Driving penalties from no contact apprehensions are a problem, especially for those who drive for a living. Grab Drivers and Jeepney drivers end up paying the bulk of fines that they can barely afford.

Here’s a thought!

Maybe we should be embracing the Finnish model of ticketing passengers. Instead of a fixed fee, each penalty is calculated against a person’s ability to pay. Rich people get fined way more than average earners. There has even been a ticket worth PhP 5.7 million in 2002.

We all make small violations on the road, we aren’t robots. Perhaps it’s time we acknowledge that reality and embrace new ways to think about rules and penalties.
