Ever wonder what it’d be like if MySpace was still a thing now?

Does Gen Z even know what MySpace is? Is it a place where you show your house?

Nah, it’s like Facebook and Instagram, but with your own style preferences in your profile.

But what if Gen Z took over? Despite having a whack design, we all know that this generation would be slaying on MySpace.

The Progression of Social Media and the culture of you.

MySpace, for lack of a better term, was YOUR space, on the internet. It was this little cozy page in the corner of the web, trying to capture your essence on one URL. Facebook had something similar, where you could add your interests, show your Liked pages, and tell everyone you worked at the Krusty Krab, but it formalized everything, with only the profile picture and banner being customizable.

With MySpace, you could tell what kind of person this was just from a single glance at their profile. It was the advent of Web 2.0, and the culture of you.

Some people on Instagram try to make their feeds look aesthetically pleasing, but for the most part, users just post photos and stories.

That’s why when Instagram recently gave users the ability to add one song to their profile, people pointed out this feature was taken from MySpace. Going from streamlined interfaces that everybody could understand, to giving back the power to express individuality on their profile, social media has come full circle now that people are more tech and SocMed-literate.

In that sense, MySpace was truly ahead of its time. Though some of its features (specifically, the friend ranking list) would not fly by our current standards, the fact that current social media giants are borrowing features speaks to how MySpace had many good ideas.
