It feels like every other day, we see news posts relating to climate change. You might say, oh it’s another article where you’ll read bad stuff is happening to the planet because 9 times out of 10, it’s bad news. The actions of many individuals, corporations, and governments continue to harm the planet, as they raise the global average temperature.

But an onslaught of bad news can be discouraging, which fuels our eco-anxiety. There is positive news on climate change!

The ozone is healing

The hole in our ozone is now healing slowly according to the United Nations. They say the hole in Antarctica will fully heal by 2066. Emissions of chlorofluorocarbon-11 (CFC-11) and HFC were banned a few years ago which helped. And we are saying goodbye to using fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gasses as we purchase cleaner chemicals compared to past decades. It helped reduce pollution.

Solar and wind power are getting stronger

In Europe, wind and solar energy overtake fossil fuels as a means of generating electricity. There was a rapid increase in the use of renewable energy among its countries, and with that change came the decline of coal and other non-renewable energy.

Personal solar panels are covering the rooftops

Rooftop solar capacity around the world has grown by nearly 50% in the last year. As more individual households transition to solar, the maximum output has increased in many areas to make the energy source more standalone, decreasing our reliance on nonrenewable energy sources.

Carbon emissions aren’t rising

Carbon emission growth in some countries has been stagnant for years, even declining in a few. Though emissions reached a new peak in 2022, levels didn’t skyrocket upwards as they did years ago.

It’s starting to work, don’t lose hope!

The coverage of climate change is mostly bad news for a reason, we bear the consequences of many years of inaction. But it is also important to recognize that global efforts have moved in a positive direction, and that, while the predictions we see online are disastrous, our fate is not sealed.
