AI has been a growing problem among educators as students rely on ChatGPT to write their essays and research papers. Instead of fighting against it, the University of the Philippines acknowledges this change and drafted guidelines on the responsible use of AI.
Some of the main takeaways of these guidelines are to hold users accountable for the proper use of AI and ensure human control of AI systems. UP emphasizes that AI should benefit all, especially the “Filipino people by fostering inclusive economic growth, sustainable development, political empowerment, and enhanced well-being, among others.”
Furthermore, the guidelines encourage collaboration between researchers and AI developers, which may lead to more innovation and responsible AI use. However, it is also important to note that the guidelines don’t give the green light for students to write their paperwork, but rather discuss how AI could help when it comes to research.
It’s undeniable that AI makes students’ lives easier, but this also gives them a way to abuse it by making it do their work. Being too dependent on AI also has cons, such as hindering students’ natural ability to learn through practice.
Day by day, the use of AI is growing, which also gives way for people to use it in the wrong way. It’s still important to keep in mind that nothing can replicate human depth, empathy, and emotional connection.
